Coho Salmon Facts

Coho Salmon

Scientific Name Oncorhynchus kisutch
Alternative Names Blueback, Grilse, Sea Trout, Silver Salmon
Distribution Coho exist from Russia to Japan in the Western Pacific and from Alaska to northern Mexico in the Eastern Pacific.
Size Max. Length - 98 cm (Approx. 38.6")

Max. Weight - 15 Kg (Approx. 33.1 Lbs)
Habitat Fry live in fresh water for 1 to 2 years although some fish will live in freshwater for up to 4 years. They then usually migrate to saltwater traveling mainly by night. Some Coho will remain in fresh water lakes. Fish that remain in fresh water until they mature never spawn. Coho return to the same waters that they originate from when returning to spawn.

In fresh water the young fish feed primarily on insects. They stay primarily in pools and are very territorial. When they reach the ocean, they remain near shore for a while and feed on planton. As they get larger, they venture farther and farther out to sea and consume larger organisms including other fish.
What do they Look Like? Ocean fish vary from metallic dark blue to green on the back and top of the sides. They are bright silver on the rest of the side and have a white belly. They have small black spots on the back and upper sides and on the caudal fin. The gums of the lower jaw are white.

When spawning males are dark green to bright green on the back and head, bright red on the sides. Females are similar but les bright than the males.
