Scientific Name Pomoxis nigromaculatus Pomoxis annularis
Distribution Has been widely introduced throughout USA so that the native range is difficult to determine. It is presumably the Atlantic Slope from Virginia to Florida, Gulf Slope west to Texas, St. Lawrence-Great Lakes and Mississippi River basins from Quebec to Manitoba in Canada south to Gulf of Mexico. Great Lakes, Hudson Bay and Mississippi River basins from New York, USA and from Ontario, Canada west to Minnesota and South Dakota and south to the Gulf of Mexico in the USA; Gulf drainages from Mobile Bay in Georgia and Alabama to Nueces River in Texas, USA.

Habitat Inhabits lakes, ponds, sloughs and backwaters/pools of streams. Usually occurs among vegetation over mud or sand, most common in clear water. Schooling fish. Up to 16 cm (6.25") feed on planktonic crustaceans and free-swimming, nocturnal, and dipterous larvae. Larger fish feed on small fishes. Occurs in sand and mud bottomed pools and backwaters of creeks and small to large rivers, lakes and ponds. Often found in turbid water.
