Ice Fishing Tips and Suggestions

  • Use the "Buddy System" at the beginning of the year or whenever ice conditions are suspect.

    • First person wears a life jacket tied through the arms holes to the waist of the second person. Allow for no more than 20 feet of rope between the two people. Use your auger as an anchor point.

    • The Life jacketed person can then move carefully forward to check the ice thickness with another auger. When advised that is safe to move up, move up carefully while the life jacketed person is braced and ready to react if anything does occur. Leapfrog your way to your fishing spot!

    • Never take ice for granted. A warm day will shrink the ice a cold day will expand the ice, both potentially causing cracks.

  • Power Augers are incredibly handy. Make sure to properly maintain it for trouble free operation. Always check the fuel level and spark plugs with the machine turned off.
