The Kootenay Rockies host award winning outdoor Canadian television program The Dimestore Fishermen.
10/15/2007
Featuring Kootenay's on international broadcast outdoor program The Dimestore Fishermen is a priority for Kootenay Rockies Tourism and partners.
Calgary, Alberta - October 15, 2007 - Recently a group of partners lead by the Creston Economic Development Authority gave the go ahead to an initiative to host the critically acclaimed award winning Canadian outdoor television program The Dimestore Fishermen in order to feature 3 communities all located in the Kootenay Rockies for domestic and international broadcast. The group of partners included Kootenay Rockies Tourism, Columbia Basin Trust and the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games Secretariat to name a few.
Host and producer of The Dimestore Fishermen Mr. Jim Hoey commented on the commitment made by the partners to feature the region.
"This is one of the most vibrant regions of Canada. The people here have a lot of energy and vision. The Kootenay's have long been associated with outdoor eco adventures. To have our 2010 group involved is exciting. To know that we are contributing positively to the Olympic games hosted in our great country is an honor. In addition to our digital platform we are also filming this region in HD in order for the footage to be used by the 2010 group for a variety of applications. It is a privilege to be able to work with people like Chris Andrews of Kootenay Rockies Tourism. This project was filming and featuring three municipalities within the Kootenays. Chris worked to ensure we had a great itinerary and also worked late on more than one occasion to assist our cause. Anytime you work with people as committed as that you are going to be successful and I think it is fair to say we really did well in acquiring the key footage we wanted while attending."
The Dimestore Fishermen attended the three communities over a period of 10 days and fished a number of water systems both rivers and lake. The program attended a number of locations in the Kootenays during their stay and the community spirit really made an impact on Hoey, who has over 135 attendances, including every province, in 10 years of traveling Canada.
"We have the very special ability to travel and see areas of Canada that some may never see. It is a dream job. The people we have met in every community were very supportive and positive. We have a lot of fans out there. We call them Dimestore Nation. When you drive down the street and see people shouting and waving when they recognize the show it is really a great feeling. We are trying to expose our country not only with a domestic broadcast but also with an international one... it is very exciting."
The episodes filmed on location in the Kootenay Rockies are projected to be on air in May of 2008 in all of The Dimestore Fishermen's markets of broadcast.

Acclaimed Canadian television fishing program The Dimestore Fishermen attends Newfoundland's northern peninsula and the Town of St. Anthony to obtain quality footage for a future feature episode.
08/15/2007
Fishing program with focus on exposing Canadian destinations travels to Northern Newfoundland.
Calgary, Alberta - August 15, 2007 - Only a week ago the critically acclaimed award winning Canadian documentary program The Dimestore Fishermen finished a near week long attendance in one of Canada's oldest settled areas.
Host/Producer Jim Hoey of The Dimestore Fishermen says, "I think it is fair to say the people here are some of the finest we have ever met in our travels. This area of the northern peninsula of Newfoundland is remarkable. It is incredible to think Vikings had a settlement in this region hundreds of years ago. Jacques Cartier was here in 1534. That is amazing. Most Canadians will really marvel at just how much history is here."
Jim Hoey said that he really enjoyed this attendance. "There is no question that the people here have a special place in my heart. We made life long friends in St. Anthony. I will never forget Smiling John Simmonds and his wife Edna. Sam & John Simms, Barry Budgell and the whole group were all special Canadians. The spirit and kindness we were treated to while we attended was really tremendous. We have a wonderful relationship with one of our favorite broadcasters, NTV (Newfoundland Television) Canada's Superstation. I think our loyal fans and viewers in Newfoundland want to see their home exposed for others to be able to experience how special St. Anthony is. Newfoundlander's have a reputation in our country as being hard working people with real home and family values. After having been here for the first time in my life I want to come back every chance I get. I have told our team that I want to be in Newfoundland every year."
For the week The Dimestore Fishermen was in attendance the crew was exposed to Newfoundland music, fare and hospitality.
"Upon arriving we were given a private concert after the St. Anthony Music Festival by the guys in the Newfoundland Navigators. John Simmonds played guitar for us every night at his Glacier Manor Resort. Being in St. Anthony has been incredible. This community really gave us their best. It is an honor to have had the chance to be here. The fishing was spectacular."
The episode featuring St. Anthony is projected to air in April or May of 2008.

Chapleau, Ontario plays host to award winning Canadian television fishing program The Dimestore Fishermen.
09/15/2007
Canadian outdoor television fishing program The Dimestore Fishermen's host & producer Jim Hoey catches lifetime fish in Chapleau.
September 3rd is not a date Jim Hoey is likely to ever forget. On this date, he caught and landed a lifetime trophy 14 pound near 34 inch Walleye at Racine Lake near Chapleau, Ontario. Close many times to a big fish, Jim has always come up just a bit short for so many reasons.
"Over the years I have been in the boat for so many other anglers landing 10 pound plus Walleye. I have been on the water watching other boats land them like our Dimestore nation watch us on TV. I have had one on the line 3 times over the years and because of a tragedy or comedy of reasons, depending on who you talk to, these fish consequently got off the hook. Until now, I have never landed a Walleye over 10 pounds. I have caught trophy fish in every other freshwater category." Jim says he thinks this is a real career milestone. "When you consider I have caught and landed thousands of walleye in my lifetime this is pretty significant. It really demonstrates that anglers who routinely catch these fish are special. I am not talking so much about Erie or Lake St. Clair. I am talking about outdoorsmen who get out on their local water systems which is what happened here. Goodness knows I have met and fished with some of the greatest anglers on the planet. I do not consider myself in this category. I think anyone who would say they do probably doesn't belong in this category. This sport is about humility. I think that mother nature is the one in control. A lot of times it is right place, right time. A lot of times it is statistical. How many times are you on the water? Eventually it will happen. When I see anyone try and take credit for their fish it really does remind me of why we ride the way we do. It is a spiritual experience and should be treated that way. Certainly there are things you can do to up your chances. However, coming off like you know is going to tell me you don't know. I tell the guys all of the time that you'll get a few standing in front of the net. You have to move your skates to get in front of the net and you have got to move your skates to stay in front of the net. Position is everything. In other words you've got to be good to be lucky."
Jim says that local fisherman and Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources Officer Tim Mutter was the reason this fish was caught.
"I give him all of the credit. He said that he had a few spots that he had a great deal of faith in. We had a not so great experience the day before with an operator in the area and Tim said 'hey, we can do this on our own'. I thought it was the turning point in the attendance. Tim is a real fisherman. He is the real thing. He was born and raised in Collingwood. He has fished his entire life. He is humble and hard working in his approach. I consider him a lifetime friend. That is one of the greatest things about fishing and the outdoors. It is the friends you make that last a lifetime. I know people will connect with the excitement in this episode. Especially someone who has either dreamt about or in actuality caught and landed and milestone fish. It was great having a chance to tell the Mayor of Chapleau Mr. Earl Freeborn and some of the Town Councilors, the story of this fish. Most of them are outdoorsmen themselves."
The episode featuring Chapleau is projected for completion in April of 2008. It will likely air in all of the markets that The Dimestore Fishermen broadcasts in May of 2008.
