Hamlet of Cambridge Bay, Nunavut welcomes award winning outdoor Canadian television documentary The Dimestore Fishermen.

7/10/2008

Featuring the south shore of Victoria Island and Hamlet of Cambridge Bay, Nunavut a privilege for Canadian documentary program The Dimestore Fishermen.

Calgary, Alberta - July 10, 2008 - The Inuit name for Cambridge Bay is "Ikaluktuutiak" meaning good fishing place. The Dimestore Fishermen crew left Calgary July 4th and arrived in Cambridge Bay on July 5th ready for action.

Host & producer of the show Mr. Jim Hoey said "The jouney was worth every moment of the travel. The name 'good fishing place' is a fairly accurate description of the opportunity Cambridge Bay offers visitors coming to target Arctic Char and Lake Trout. What we were very impressed by was the history of the area and the hosptiality of the Inuit people. Our host George Hakunguk was amazing. He is an Inuk with a diverse background having been a 3rd grade teacher and now working in his role with the environment. He is one of the finest men we have had the priveledge to meet in our travels. George met us at the airport and promptly took us to his home to introduce us to his wonderful wife."

While on location The Dimestore Fishermen caught both Lake trout and Arctic Char while fishing with George who is also formerly a Natural Resources officer in Nunavut. Jim also said, "We were able to see Muskox and other arctic wildlife and George took us into the countryside on ATV's. We were of course above the treeline and were in the land of the midnight sun which was really an experience. George showed us some of the local sites and buildings in Cambridge Bay. He also gave us a great deal of historical information relative to the region and the Inuit. We were in Cambridge Bay during Nunavut day. This was the 15th anniversary of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement Act. We saw a thriving community in Cambridge Bay and it was a pleasure to get to know George. He is a very classy individual and great outdoorsman."

The episode featuring Cambridge Bay is projected to broadcast in early 2009. To learn more about Cambridge Bay, Nunavut please go online to www.cambridgebay.ca
