Village of Avonlea, Saskatchewan is the site for The Dimestore Fishermen's 2008 Canada Day attendance to film feature episode for broadcast.
Calgary, Alberta - July 3, 2008 - Avonlea, Saskatchewan played host to the 141st attendance for the filming of a feature episode of The Dimestore Fishermen during the dates of June 28, 2008 - July 2, 2008. During the attendance Jim Hoey fished the Dunnet Regional Park Walleye derby with local teenage fisherman Matt Getzlaf.
Jim said "Matt is as classy a young man as we could ever hope to know. He routinely achieves excellence scholastically, which is something we at The Dimestore Fishermen place a high emphasis on when speaking with youth. He also works hard at fishing and is a strong participating member of his community here in Avonlea. I have no doubt that he will continue to be a strong character individual as his life continues. He showed a real interest in pursuing a career in fishing and we would like to try and help with that if we can. When someone like Matt comes along you feel blessed to even know them. He did a great job while we attended with the fishing and also showing us what he is all about as a person."
Matt is the son of Mayor Alex Getzlaf, a life time resident of Avonlea and his wife Michelle. They also have a daughter Ashley who currently attends the University of Regina on a hockey scholarship and daughter Marissa who appears poised to follow in her older sibling's foot steps en route to success in life.
Jim went on to say, "Alex did a great job with the supporting members of the Village of Avonlea in pulling together the resources and itinerary for our attendance. This is a Village of 450 people and the work they did to put together a fantastic feature episode was truly inspirational to me and my family and of course our long time cinematographer and co host Mr. Warren "the war is on" Korzinski."
Warren had this to say about his time in Avonlea "Sitting around the fire with the fine folks in Avonlea on the July 1st long weekend and getting to know them as people was a real treat. As I am also from a small town of around 450 people I felt right at home in Avonlea and that says everything about our hosts and their friends and family." The "War is On" also said, "Young Matt Getzlaf as a sixteen year demonstrated great maturity and it was exciting to see a young man of his age have the fire in his belly for fishing that he has."
For the first time ever host & producer Mr. Jim Hoey's children, Jessica Taylor Marie (9) and Hayden James Raymond (6) participated in the filming of the episode. Mrs. Shannon McConnell-Hoey, Executive Producer of The Dimestore Fishermen, wife to Jim Hoey and mother to Jessie and Hayden was also in attendance.
Shannon said "Jim really loves Canada and her people. It is an honor to serve our country. I am from Flin Flon, Manitoba and I have grown up in the outdoors. We have been together since the inception of The Dimestore Fishermen. He is dad, he is father and he is a selfless a man as I have ever known. It is so great to see our children growing up believing they can accomplish anything. That is what we have tried to teach them. Jim loves all children and he seems to have a natural way with seniors as well. It is almost like he is a magnet for them. They seem to be attracted to his natural way of happiness."
Jim praised his wife Shannon saying "She is my everything. She was the one who pushed me to start doing this. She has always supported me unconditionally and I wake up every morning thanking the creator for putting her in my life. She has given me two beautiful children who have their mother's loving spirit." Jim laughs when he recalls, "I remember traveling around western Canada in our first season in an old beater Ford Ltd. with our daughter throwing up all the way. She doesn't have the motion sickness anymore thank goodness. We've done it all the way together. Now it is great because we are doing it together. There are all kinds of times through out the year and specifically the production season that we take as a family. Jessie is a skier, guitar player and a girl guide. Hayden is a Beaver, Karate student and happy fisherman. We are totally blessed."
Jim & Matt fished for fun in the derby and congrats go out to Randy & Karen Lerner from Regina for winning the event that 22 teams participated in. The Dirt Hills Wildlife Federation's Mr. Warren Howse and his great group of volunteers played host for this growing derby and both Jim & Warren expressed appreciation for all of his effort and the effort of the volunteers. The War is on Korzinski said "The Dirt Hills Wildlife Federation did an awesome job in putting the event together. They are very lucky to have a man like Warren Howse taking the initiative with his team of volunteers to show the great spirit their association to put an event like this together successfully year after year."
The episode featuring the Village of Avonlea is projected to air in early 2009. To learn more about the Village of Avonlea go online to www.avonlea.biz
